SMSF investment strategy: your questions answered

By easySMSF, SMSF Specialist Team · Updated

These are the questions trustees most often ask after reading our investment strategy guide — from whether you can write it yourself, to how ranges work, what the auditor actually checks, and what happens when a fund holds a single property or crypto. Administration and documentation questions only: we don't provide financial product advice or recommend investments.

Before you ask: the three rules behind almost every answer

Nearly every investment strategy question comes back to the same three requirements. First, the strategy must exist in writing and must genuinely reflect this fund and these members — a generic download with nothing fund-specific fails. Second, it must be reviewed at least annually and on material events, with the review recorded in a trustee minute. Third, the fund must actually operate within it — the independent auditor tests your real portfolio against the documented ranges each year.

Everything in the FAQ below is a variation on those rules: how to write ranges that constrain without handcuffing you, how to document a concentrated portfolio, how pension phase changes the liquidity answer, and how to evidence the annual review. For the full walk-through with worked examples, start with the investment strategy guide and the free template.

  • Every SMSF needs a written strategy — no exceptions for small or single-member funds
  • Review annually and on material events; minute every review
  • The auditor checks compliance, not investment performance
  • Concentrated funds are allowed if the strategy acknowledges and justifies them
  • Insurance must be considered for each member — 'not needed' is fine if it's reasoned
  • Crypto is permitted through supported platforms only — no private or hardware wallets
