Before you start: the three decisions that shape your SMSF setup
Most of the questions below come down to three early decisions: who will be the trustee (a special-purpose company or the members individually), which bank the fund will use, and whether the fund will borrow to buy property. The trustee decision affects the ASIC fee and how easy it is to change members later; the bank decision affects how quickly the fund can receive contributions; and borrowing adds a bare trust and lender requirements on top of the standard setup.
If you're still weighing up whether an SMSF is right for you at all, start with the setup page — it walks through the full seven-step establishment process, the eligibility checklist and the documents you'll need before you begin. Then come back here for the detail on any question that's still open.
- Setup timing: fund operational in days, ATO registrations 3–5 business days
- Costs: one fixed setup fee, no percentage-of-balance charges, government fees passed on at cost
- Trustees: corporate vs individual compared, including the $636 ASIC fee
- Rollovers: your existing fund must transfer within ~3 business days of request
- Property: LRBA structure, bare trusts, deposits and lender serviceability
