SMSF crypto holdings: approved exchanges and how to value them

By easySMSF, SMSF Specialist Team · Updated

Two questions decide whether crypto works inside an SMSF: where the fund is allowed to hold it, and how it's valued each 30 June. easySMSF supports cryptocurrency held directly on Australian regulated exchanges — CoinSpot, Swyftx, Coinstash, Bitaroo and Independent Reserve — in the fund's own name. We do not support any other exchanges, offshore cryptocurrency accounts, or crypto held on private wallets or hardware devices. Here's how the supported route works and how the valuation rules apply.

Which exchanges are allowed — and why

An SMSF can legally invest in cryptocurrency, but the ATO requires the assets to be held separately from members' personal assets, in the fund's own name, and valued at market value each year. Those requirements are what shape our policy.

easySMSF supports crypto held directly on five Australian regulated exchanges: CoinSpot, Swyftx, Coinstash, Bitaroo and Independent Reserve. The exchange account is opened in the fund's name, and transaction, income and 30 June valuation data flows into our administration platform from the exchange. That data connection is what keeps your accounting, tax return and audit fast and fixed-fee.

Anything outside those five platforms is not supported: no other exchanges, no offshore accounts (Binance, Coinbase, Kraken and similar), and no private wallets or hardware devices such as Ledger or Trezor. Self-custody has no data feed, makes ownership hard to evidence, and adds manual audit work that doesn't fit a fixed-fee model.

How the 30 June valuation works: every asset in an SMSF must be reported at market value on 30 June. For crypto on a supported exchange, that is simply the exchange's quoted AUD price applied to the fund's exact unit holdings at year-end — taken directly from the exchange statement, so the number your auditor sees is the number the exchange reported.

During the year, every purchase, sale, swap, staking reward and airdrop is recorded in AUD at the date it happens. Disposals trigger CGT events (15% on gains in accumulation, 10% with the 12-month discount, 0% in pension phase), and rewards are income at market value when received. Because the exchange history flows through automatically, nothing is reconstructed by hand at year-end.

If your fund already holds crypto somewhere else — a personal wallet, a hardware device or an offshore platform — it must be disposed of or moved onto one of the supported Australian exchanges before we can take the fund on. If self-custody is essential to your strategy, we'd rather say up front that we're not the right administrator.

  • Supported exchanges: CoinSpot, Swyftx, Coinstash, Bitaroo, Independent Reserve
  • Account opened in the fund's own name — never a member's personal account
  • No other exchanges, offshore accounts, private wallets or hardware devices
  • 30 June market value taken from the exchange's AUD closing price
  • Every trade, swap, staking reward and airdrop recorded in AUD at the date it occurs
  • Audit evidence supplied directly from exchange statements — no manual records
  • CGT on every disposal: 15% accumulation (10% with discount), 0% pension phase
  • Trust deed must permit digital assets; investment strategy must address crypto
